Attorney Referral Fees, Explained — and Why They Don't Cost You More

2026-06-15

What a referral fee is

When one attorney refers your case to another who is a better fit, the two lawyers may agree to share the legal fee. This is a long-standing, regulated practice that helps you reach the right specialist instead of being turned away.

It's ethical and disclosed

Bar rules permit fee-sharing between attorneys only with your knowledge and written consent, and the total fee must be reasonable. You'll be told about any referral arrangement and asked to agree to it in writing.

You don't pay extra

The referral fee comes out of the total legal fee — it is shared between the lawyers, not added on top. Your cost is the same as if you had hired the handling attorney directly, but with the benefit of being matched to the right one.
